TogetherGreen is a conservation program sponsored by
National Audubon Society and Toyota. TogetherGreen aims to
inspire leadership and opportunities that motivate people
everywhere to take action at home, in their communities and
beyond to improve the health of our environment. In 2008,
TogetherGreen provided funds through its Volunteer Days
Program, for restoration of our ten acre east side sanctuary
known as Blair Woods. Over the last year the TogetherGreen
funds enabled us to engage 150 volunteers to complete Phase
One which involved removal of 135 yards of invasive plants,
design and construction of two trails, and the planting of 69
native plants. We have recently received a second Volunteer
Days grant from TogetherGreen, which will allow us to continue
the restoration of Blair Woods through further invasive removal,
trail building and maintenance and planting of native plants.
Watch for the progress through our website, eblasts and
newsletter.
Beginning this September, in conjunction with National Public
Lands Day, TogetherGreen will be organizing 240 Volunteer
Days at various times and locations across the country every
year through 2013.
TogetherGreen volunteer events are designed to connect
people with ways to make a conservation difference in their
local communities. By building stronger alliances with other
local organizations, Audubon hopes to attract new and diverse
volunteers to help address pressing environmental problems
and opportunities.

THIS PROJECT IS SUPPORTED BY TOGETHERGREEN, AN
AUDUBON PROGRAM WITH FUNDING FROM TOYOTA.
Removal of invasive plants last year in the vicinity of the pond
prepared the area for Phase Two: assessment and in-depth
design work and implementation to stabilize and diversify the
vegetation within the riparian zone that includes the pond area
and its inflow and outflow stretches of creek. During the
planning stage of Phase One, volunteer pond restoration
experts, including Judy Walther of Environmental Survey
Consulting, met with our project leader at Blair Woods to
evaluate the pond status and advise us on sequencing the
riparian restoration work.
TogetherGreen has provided funding for the pond and riparian
corridor restoration project. This project, is known as the Blair
Woods Wetlands Project will accomplish the following:
The goals of the Blair Woods Wetlands Project are:
1. Restoring creek bank habitat which will improve water quality
in the pond;
2. Continuing removal of non-native species along the riparian
corridor and surrounding the pond;
3. Stabilizing eroded sections of the creek;
4. Reestablishing native riparian vegetation;
5. Coordinating with local schools, youth groups and families in
the surrounding under served neighborhoods to participate in
habitat restoration of the site and for future use as a “living lab”
site;
6. Developing a monitoring program to measure project
success;
7. Developing curriculum to be shared with area schools and
teachers who adopt the project.
