Youth Birding Camp - Next Date:  October 17, 2009
Travis Audubon Society believes it is very important to train the next
generation of birders, who will, we hope, grow up to be concerned
about nature and preserving our natural world. But let's not tell the
kids that! This special day is about fun and also has the benefit of
increasing kids' self-esteem as they learn just how much they can
see, understand, and do! Camp runs from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on a
Saturday at
Hornsby Bend (near Bergstrom Airport).

Under the guidance of our experienced leaders, our day-campers
learn to use binoculars, a field guide, and a field journal. They learn
how to identify birds in the field; enjoy presentations about other
critters; have fun with about 16-20 other kids, well-supervised by our
program leaders.

Camp tuition includes a journal, a t-shirt, a snack, and lunch, and
presentations by experts - aimed right at the campers' interest level.
Campers may bring their own binoculars, borrow a pair from staff on
site or purchase a pair from Travis Audubon for $20. Scholarships
are available.

Audubon Adventures Kits
Audubon Adventures is an environmental education program for
children in grades 3 to 6. Developed by professional environmental
educators, Audubon Adventures presents basic, scientifically
accurate facts about birds, wildlife, and their habitats. It comes
packaged as a Classroom Kit serving 32 students, and is used by
classroom teachers, after-school program coordinators, special
education instructors, language arts teachers, and homeschoolers.

The goal of Audubon Adventures is to develop
in young people an appreciation, awareness,
and understanding of the natural world - birds,
other wildlife, and all living things; the habitats,
systems, and interplay of forces that affect living things; and the
connections between people and nature. Such an awareness of
nature creates in young people (and their teachers and families) a
sense of stewardship for the natural world.  The program is easily
implemented and can be integrated into the existing curriculum
areas of science, social studies, mathematics, language arts, and
creative arts. Allow yourself to become a student and learn right
along with your class. Together you can ask questions about the
natural world, and together you can make great discoveries!

Audubon Adventures includes action-oriented content about healthy
habitats, essays, written puzzles, word challenges, games, and
recommended Web sites.

If you are an
instructor who would like to request a kit, please
e-mail
info@travisaudubon.org with your name, title, school
affiliation, grade level, and contact details. Please let us know if you
have previously received an Audubon Adventures Kit from us. We
can award one kit per instructor and will award kits on a
funds-available basis. When possible, we like to distribute them to
as many different schools and institutions as possible.

To make a
financial contribution to Travis Audubon Society to
underwrite Audubon Adventures Kits, please mail a check for $45
per kit (
payable to Travis Audubon Society), to TAS, 3710 Cedar
Street, Box 5, Austin, Texas 78705. The fee includes shipping. Be
sure to note "Audubon Adventures" in the memo. line of your check.
You contribution is tax-deductible and you will receive a receipt from
Travis Audubon. Please contact Travis Audubon at 512.300.BIRD
(2473) or
info@travisaudubon.org with questions about making
contributions to TAS.

Fledgling Birders Walk
In Fall 2005 Travis Audubon launched a monthly Fledgling Birders
Walk, for your fine-feathered young friends who are learning to bird.
This three-hour walk, led by adult Travis Audubon Society volunteers,
takes place at Hornsby Bend Bird Observatory in southeast Austin.
The youth and leaders will hike the trails around the Hornsby Bend
ponds. Meet in the parking lot of Hornsby Bend's Center for
Environmental Research at 8:30 a.m. for this three-hour activity.
Children should be picked up at 11:30 at the same place.

There is no age limit for participating in the walk, but children under
8 years old must be accompanied by an adult (older children may be
dropped off and picked up at the meeting site). Parents and other
adults are welcomed to attend. Please bring your own snacks,
water, and binoculars. We may be able to provide loaner binoculars
for youth with advance notice. Good walking shoes and long pants
are recommended.

March 2007 Update:  We have temporarily suspended the Fledgling
Birders Walks until a volunteer leader(s) steps up to lead the walks.
If you are over 18 years old, a member of Travis Audubon, and enjoy
birding and children, please contact us at
info@travisaudubon.org
so we can explore whether this would be a good fit for you.
