Beginning Backyard Birding

9:00 AM – 1:15 PM

Fee $25 Travis Audubon members, $30 non-members. Limited to 27 registrants.

If you want to get acquainted with common backyard birds that are here year – round, along with a few summer and winter visitors that grace our neighborhoods, this class is for you.

Perhaps you are beginning to notice backyard birds and want to be confident of your identification. You picked up a field guide, and found there were too many choices to be sure. Maybe you are wondering what species you can attract with various seed mixes. You’d like to know what bird is singing so loudly at all hours of the night, and what sounds like a miniature horse whinnying.

In this class you will get tips on how to identify Austin’s expected backyard birds. You will also get tips on how to attract them by providing water, supplementary food, native plants, and shelter. The class includes interactive classroom instruction, as well as lots of resources to steer you to websites, apps, books and magazines. As is typical of Travis Audubon classes, most materials will be provided electronically for download. You will have fun and leave with an enhanced appreciation for our central Texas birds.

This class includes one session. It will be held at an east Austin location. Light refreshments will be provided. Bring a sack lunch. After you register, you will receive more details via email.

The class will be taught by Jane Tillman. Jane is current co-chair of the TAS Speaker’s Bureau and Program Committee, a member of the Education Committee and a Travis Audubon Master Birder. She is a past president of the Native Plant Society of Texas, Austin chapter. Jane is also the field trip coordinator for the Texas Ornithological Society and leads field trips for Travis Audubon. She gives talks about Central Texas birds and gardening for birds to garden clubs, neighborhood associations, lifelong learning groups, bird festivals, and libraries. Please contact Jane at jtillman@utexas.edu for more information.
