There comes a time in every birder’s life when they have to tackle the challenging bird ID groups: Shorebirds, Gulls, Flycatchers and of course Sparrows. The good news (or bad news depending on how you look at it) is that the Sparrows group is the least difficult of those four groups. More good news: Central Texas is a great place to find and study Sparrows. On a really good Sparrow day you can find twenty or more Sparrow species in the Austin area! This class will get you started by learning about our nine most common Sparrows.
The class will focus on ID challenges, but will also cover behavior, habitat preferences, vocalizations and range on the most commons sparrow species found in Central Texas. There will be two weekday two-hour classes followed by a Saturday trip to Pedernales Falls State Park. This location offers two bird blinds that are excellent for close up Sparrow study during the winter months.
Instructor: James Giroux
James has been a birder with a particular interest in bird photography for 20 years. He is on the Travis Audubon field trip committee and has led birding trips throughout the Austin area, and to the Chiricahua Mountains in SE Arizona.
