Swifts and swallows play a vital role in our ecosystem, particularly in controlling insect populations. Central Texas is home to several species of these fascinating aerial hunters, including the Chimney Swift, Barn Swallow, Purple Martin and Cliff Swallow. Rare sightings include the Tree Swallow and Northern Rough-winged Swallow. By the end of this class, you will have a solid understanding of swift and swallow biology and be able to identify the species most commonly found in the Austin area.
This class is designed for beginner birders interested in learning more about swifts and swallows. It includes two online classroom sessions and one field trip to a local birding hotspot where you’ll have the opportunity to observe and identify these remarkable birds.
We recommend bringing binoculars, a hat, sturdy closed-toe shoes, sunscreen, and water for the field trip. A limited number of binoculars are available for loan to students who do not have their own.
Liz is a Park Ranger for the City of Austin, and recently completed her MS in Wildlife Ecology at Texas State University. She also is an instructor of Environmental Science at Austin Community College. Liz is an enthusiastic birder and is excited to be a part of the team teaching this year’s intro to birding class!
