Flycatchers are intriguing birds that specialize in aerobatic maneuvers in order to catch small insects right out of the air! There are many species of flycatchers that you might see in the Austin area, but we will focus on the 6 to 8 most common, most easily identified flycatchers so you can recognize them when you see them and appreciate their skills. We will not cover the “empid” flycatchers, which require advanced ID skills. We will also cover the biological adaptations these birds leverage to hunt successfully, along with vocalizations and visual traits that will help you identify them.
Dave Read has been a wildlife photographer for over 25 years, both underwater and above ground. He is an avid birder and is excited to work with new birders to start them on the road toward enjoying and identifying the birds they see.
