Discover the fascinating world of bird diversity and evolution through the birds of Travis County! In this class, we’ll explore the unique adaptations that have helped birds thrive in various habitats around the globe and how some of these traits evolved over time. From specialized beaks and feet to remarkable migratory patterns, we’ll dive into the strategies birds use to survive and adapt. Along the way, you’ll learn how to identify several local species that will serve as examples of some incredible adaptations of birds. Across two courses we’ll take a journey from the evolutionary roots of modern birds to present day diversity. Lessons from this course will be reinforced during a field trip where we will observe and discuss these species in the context of their evolutionary history and unique role in the environment!
This class is taught by Brian Stokes, Travis Audubon member and PhD Candidate in Ecology, Evolution and Behavior at the University of Texas.
