Bird Behavior Walk at Five Mile Dam in Hays County

7:30 AM – 10:30 PM
Free to everyone, registration required.

Join Shelia Hargis to explore one of the great birding locations in Hays County, Five Mile Dam Park. Five Mile Dam is situated on the Blanco River. Currently most of the water is flowing underground, but there is one small pool of water visible. The vast majority of the park is soccer fields, but the part along the river is natural and is a great place for sparrows in the winter.

Shelia is fascinated with bird behavior, so we’ll take time to observe and discuss behavior as we encounter it. Texas Parks & Wildlife researchers have banded Loggerhead Shrikes at the park, so one of our top goals will be to find one or more of the banded birds, watch their behavior (they may already be nesting), and talk about their natural history. Check out the eBird data for the park.

There are porta-potties available at Five Mile Dam. We will be mostly walking on paved or
gravel trails although we might have to chase a sparrow into a rocky area. Sturdy shoes are
recommended. Expect to walk about 1.5 miles. This walk is open to all levels of birders and is
free, but registration is required and limited to 12 participants. Contact Shelia at Shelia.hargis@gmail.com with any questions.
