Birdathon: Bluebonnets & Black-throated Sparrows: A Springtime Excursion to Reimers Ranch

Sunday, April 6,  7:00 AM – 11:00 AM
$35 per person, max. 10 people

Dive into the heart of springtime for a unique birding adventure at Travis County’s Reimers Ranch Park, a sprawling 2400-acre oasis nestled along the Pedernales River, right at the doorstep of the vibrant Texas Hill Country. Guided by local bird guide Rachel Zierzow and wildlife photographer Connor Teseny, you’ll explore the park for spring migrants, birds of prey, and unique Western species, against a backdrop of stunning spring wildflowers.

We’ll meet at sunrise in the Pavilion parking area, welcomed by early morning bird songs. Our leisurely walk will cover a 3-mile loop through diverse habitats and scenic views along the Pedernales River, following the Granite Trail to the River Access Trail and returning on the Multi-use Trail. Keep an eye out for species like Pyrrhuloxia, Black-throated Sparrow, Verdin, Rufous-crowned Sparrow, Canyon and Rock Wrens, Spotted Towhee, and more!

We’ll stop for a mid-morning picnic at the Pavilion. For those interested in birding more after lunch, we’ll drive to the North Shore, exploring the Turkey Loop and River Overlook Trail.

Bring binoculars and drinking water, wear sturdy shoes, sunscreen or protective clothing, and a sun hat. Bring a sack lunch to enjoy halfway through the walk.

ADA-accessible bathrooms are located at the Pavilion parking area and other parking areas have porta-potties and/or restrooms. The majority of trails are level, with packed granite gravel or packed dirt, with some areas of pavement. The walk down to the river has a short but steep hill to descend and climb back up. About 48 hours before the walk, registrants will be sent a reminder with trip details and any updates. For questions prior to the walk, contact rachel.zierzow@gmail.com.

The entrance fee into the park is $5.00 per person, $3.00 for anyone 62 and older, and free for disabled veterans and children 12 years and younger. **THE PARK ONLY ACCEPTS CASH.** Reservations to enter the park are not required nor accepted. Please consult park website for any additional information.
