Birdathon: Roy Creek Canyon (FULL)

Sunday, May 5,  7:30 AM – 11:30 AM
$50 per person, max. 12 people

Visit Roy Creek Canyon (just over the Travis County line in Hays County, near Westcave Preserve) during the peak of spring migration!

Roy Creek Canyon is a hidden gem of the Hill Country. The owners, who have a long history with Travis Audubon, are actively working to conserve/protect the canyon. Its pristine, spring-fed waters flow into the Pedernales River and the lush vegetation in the canyon provides habitat for diverse and rare species of animals and plants.

Expect to observe endangered Golden-cheeked Warblers, as well as locally uncommon breeding species such as Acadian Flycatcher and Louisiana Waterthrush. Both Northern Parula and Yellow-throated Warbler breed in the canyon. From the canyon rim, we can scan the tops of old growth bald cypress, oaks, and sycamores for migrating songbirds, which should be well-represented given the date. We will also look for the more “western” species (Black-throated Sparrow, Canyon Wren, Common Raven, etc.) which call the canyon home.

This trip will be led by Rich Kostecke, TAS Board Member and one of this year’s Birding Brawl participants.
