Join Travis Audubon and Austin Parks and Recreation Department for a “Birding in Cemeteries” walk. This walk will be a mix of birding and history. Discover why cemeteries are awesome places to find birds, while also taking in some of Austin’s history and learning about the earliest citizens interred in our city’s oldest cemetery. Soaring hawks, raucous jays and crows, adorable wrens, and colorful migrating warblers are likely to be found among the graves, mature trees, shrubs and grassy areas of this 40-acre green space in the heart of Austin. The walk will be co-led by Travis Audubon Field trip leader Laura Tull, and Ryan Dees, with Austin PARD Cemetery Programs. All birding levels are welcome!
Park along the street in front of the historic Oakwood Chapel, just inside the main gate at 1601 Navasota Street. Please arrive a few minutes before the scheduled start time of 8:00 Bring binoculars if you have them (a small supply of loaners will be available), wear closed-toed shoes, and clothing layers appropriate for the weather. Bring water and snacks if desired. Walk will proceed in the event of drizzle or very light rain, but will be canceled for lightning or heavy rain. A small supply of loaner binoculars will be available.
A restroom will be available in the Chapel at the start and end of the walk.
**This walk is FREE, but registration is required and limited to 16 participants.
