This class will introduce the fourteen hummingbird species most commonly encountered in Texas. Byron Stone, aka “Dr Birdie,” will discuss their ranges, habitat, and frequency of occurrence, and will illustrate and discuss characteristics including behavior, field marks and vocalizations that can be used to identify these birds.
The recommended text for class participants is Steve N. G. Howell’s Hummingbirds of North America: The Photographic Guide. Sherry Williamson’s A Field Guide to Hummingbirds of North America, is a viable alternative, but the instructional approach in this class, especially to the small, gorgeted hummingbirds, will follow Howell’s organization.
This is the second of two class sessions being held July 18 and July 25, 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM at a Central Austin location. For full class details and to register, please click here.
