September Birdability Walk at Blair Woods

Saturday, September 14th from 8 AM to 10 AM

Join Birdability founder and 2024 recipient of the Victor Emanuel Conservation Award, Virginia Rose, for a morning of accessible birding at Blair Woods! This premier urban nature preserve is a splendid woodsy habitat with a wealth of accessible amenities including: a new 1/3-mile-long crushed-granite trail, a wonderful bird blind overlooking a water feature, a turtle-filled pond, a butterfly garden, a Chimney Swift tower, and picnic tables.

While we keep our eyes and ears open for fall migrants, participants will have the opportunity to record short video testimonials in honor of Virginia and her mission to make birding accessible to all!

This field trip is specifically for birders with disabilities as well as those with disabilities who would like to explore birding. Care attendants and other helpers are also welcome!

Access Info: The accessible crushed-granite trail is medium-wide and well-maintained, with ample shade and slopes ranging from flat to moderate. There are occasional benches, accessible signage, and an accessible porta potty. As the preserve is located along MLK Jr. Blvd., traffic noise can be heard in different parts of the property.

Parking is very limited at this site. We suggest that if you have a driver, that he or she drop you off at the first accessible parking space, which is paved and on the right once you enter the property. A volunteer can then direct your driver to a nearby parking lot. For those who need an accessible space, we will have four to six spaces at the end of the dirt driveway.

What to Bring: As always, folks should bring a hat, water, sunscreen, binoculars, and/or whatever other birding tools you use. (We will provide loaner binoculars for those who need them.) If you can walk, you should wear comfortable shoes.

Registration for this outing is required and limited to 15 participants (plus additional attendants if you bring someone to help you participate). If you have any questions or additional access needs, please email Eric Clow at birdcitynews@gmail.com.
