CANCELLED: State Park Field Trip Series: Buescher and Bastrop State Parks

This trip has been cancelled due to reaching Stage 5 COVID-19 Restrictions in Travis County.

7:00 AM – 11:00 AM

Led by Terry Banks

Buescher and Bastrop State Parks are two large state parks in Bastrop County located within 5 miles of one another, separated by a park road. These two state parks are mixed hardwood and pine forests. In 2011 a large fire burned through the Bastrop area and decimated much of Bastrop SP’s vegetation. Most of its pine trees were killed. Buescher had some damage, but not as much as Bastrop. Now, 10 years later, it will be interesting to explore these two parks and see the regrowth, especially after recent rains.

In the past, Pileated Woodpeckers, Pine Warblers, Northern Parulas, Summer Tanagers, Great-Crested Flycatchers and a host of other birds have been found in at least one of these two parks. It is possible that Mississippi Kites have nested here. Come and explore with us and see what we can find.

COVID restrictions: Please follow the COVID restrictions, Stage 2, listed on the Travis Audubon Website.

Accessibility: There will probably be some walking around certain areas during this field trip. However, any member of this trip can participate however he or she sees fit. We walk around certain areas, but a person can also stay around an area close by and does not need to feel that he or she needs to keep up with the group because we always return to our starting place within a few minutes. Also, there is some birding by car and birding by ear, especially when we are going between the two parks. The field trip participant can communicate with the field trip leader, and for this field trip we can tailor the field trip to the needs of our individual members.

Bathrooms are accessible and there is accessible parking.

Reservations: In order to participate in this field trip, reservations must be made online with the State Parks Service. One reservation per car is needed at a cost of $5.00 per person, unless, of course, you have a State Parks Pass and then your entrance is free. (You STILL need to register, however.) It is only necessary to register for one of these parks, because a registration includes both Buescher and Bastrop state parks.

Registration is required. Limited to 10 registrants. Registrants will receive additional details via email prior to the trip.
