Virtual Class: Introduction to Birds and Birding Spring 2021

The Spring Introduction to Birds and Birding class and all field trips will be held virtually in March of 2021. While continuing to follow the guidance of local, state and federal authorities about the status of the coronavirus in Central Texas, it has become clear that we will still be following social distancing protocols in March. I think you will still find a lot to love about the class in this new format, and you might be surprised at how much you will enjoy it!

This class is for those who want to take an active role in seeking out birds and learning to identify them. It promises to transform your relationship to birds and start you down the road toward a life-long love and enjoyment of birds. Instruction will be provided during four classroom sessions which will include information and videos about four field trips to popular birding locations around Austin. The information about the field trips will show you what the habitat looks like, some of the birds that are there, and how to find them. Attendance at all the classroom sessions is highly recommended in order to get the most out of the class. Sessions will not be recorded.

Introduction to Birds and Birding will introduce students to a variety of bird and birding-related topics including: how to identify birds; field guides and binoculars; bird identification of many species of Central Texas birds; bird vocalizations; where to go birding in Central Texas; bird migration; and bird conservation. Tuition includes a copy of the sixth edition of the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America, our “text book” for the class. All presentations and many other resources will be provided by access to a dedicated class website. No prior birding experience is necessary.

The classroom sessions will be held on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 pm on Zoom. Dates are 3/10, 17, 24, 31.

A TAS Staff member will get in touch with you about options for securing your class text book, and the instructor (Laurie Foss) will reach out via email with instructions for accessing the Zoom meetings, prior to the first day of class.

This class size is not limited, so we hope you will join us for this unique class! Tuition is $95 for TAS members and $110 for non-members.
