Wild Weekday at Doeskin Ranch

8:30 AM – 11:00 AM

Join Lori Malloy and Brad James at Doeskin Ranch, one of three public use areas on the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge.  Doeskin Ranch is located on RR 1174, Bertram, TX 78605, about 12 miles west of Liberty Hill.

Meet at the kiosk, just down the hill from the parking area.  Bird watching begins in this area filled with large oaks, brush and grasslands.  We’ll take the Creek Trail that follows a tributary to Cow Creek for a short distance.  This riparian section is always birdy.  Then we go up the hill on the Rimrock trail to a plateau with great views of the Hill Country.  The plateau is always a good area to look for sparrows, doves and distant hawks.  On the plateau we join the Shinoak trail, then travel back to the Rimrock trail.  Joining the Rimrock trail again, we walk back down the hill to more grasslands and then back to the riparian area and creek crossing.  We’ll finish the walk by taking the Pond and Prairie trail. Target birds include our resident birds and migrants that may be passing through in October, as well as early winter birds.

Wear clothing appropriate for the weather. Bring a hat, plenty of water, a snack, and insect repellant.  The walk is a little over 3 miles with a steep elevation climb of about 200 feet on the Rimrock trail.  We’ll take it slow, looking for birds.  Wear good hiking shoes, the trail can be rocky with loose gravel.  Vault toilets are available at the trailhead.

All birding levels are welcome.

Registration is required, and further details will be provided to registrants prior to the date of the trip.  Limited to 15 registrants.  Please contact brad@specializinginnature.com if you have any questions.
