Bird Question: Recommended Field Guide

JANUARY 5, 2012:
I just moved to travis heights from out of town and was wondering if you could recommend a bird guide I can use to identify all the little birds that come and go.

Thank you for your question to Travis Audubon, and welcome to Austin!

Your question about what field guide to use is a very good one. Many people who move here don’t realize that our location puts us between the western and eastern field guides! When I get this question, I recommend that people buy the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America. It covers the entire US and is an easy to carry book. The sixth edition has just been published, so all of their range maps are up to date and the taxonomic order of the birds is current according to the most recent AOU guidelines.

I hope that helps!
