We live in Austin. I would like to get my family up early one am and arrive at a place where I could show my girls painted buntings as they begin their day. I know we are close to such an area, but don’t know exactly where to go. Could you please provide some direction for us?
Thank you.

Edward,
Painted Buntings are one of the more spectacular birds of the hill country, and well worth getting up early for. What part of town do you live in? The birds are found in many locations around Austin, and I may be able to direct you to a nearby location for you.
Before going out to see a Painted Bunting, be sure that you are familiar with their vocalization. This is one of the best ways to help you find them. On Wednesday, I was scouting for a future field trip that I’m leading up at the Balcones Canyonlands NWR and saw a male, female and youngster foraging very close to me while I sat and watched. Magical!
