This morning, instead of hitting the trails in the sweltering heat, seven birders gathered at the Galaxy Cafe for breakfast and camaraderie.
For over two hours, we shared stories, laughed, and enjoyed multiple cups of coffee. It was heartwarming to see everyone open up about their diverse experiences living with disabilities. One particularly memorable moment came when a participant posed a dilemma: “What do you do with two walking poles when you need your binoculars?” Without missing a beat, two members shouted in unison, “Pole loops!” and demonstrated the simple yet effective solution.
This gathering was more than just a breakfast; it was a celebration of our growing community. We chatted about upcoming events, including the PUMA parties, Chimney Swift Night Out, Wingspan night, and the TAS book club. There’s always something happening, so be sure to check the Travis Audubon calendar for all the details!
One participant shared how a Travis Audubon member had introduced him to Birdability back in 2018 while in a checkout line at Lowe’s. This just goes to show the importance of spreading the word about birding and creating inclusive spaces for everyone.
A shoutout to Birdability captain Eric Clow for organizing this wonderful event and to Pam Fletcher, SCI facilitator at St. David’s, for promoting it. Your efforts make a real difference in our community!
Mark your calendars for the next Birdability event on August 10—we can’t wait to see you there!
Together, we’re not just birdwatchers; we’re building a supportive community that embraces everyone. Let’s keep the momentum going! ???
