The Search for King by Thomas Smith is a birding book for all ages. The story follows the birds from the bird kingdom as they gather at the Meeting Tree to decide on a new king. The only requirement being that the new king must have black feathers. Each page is filled with beautiful real-world photos, informative blurbs, and witty poetry about each species that takes the stage. Beginning with each bird declaring why they should be king, the fable ends with a warmhearted lesson about character and leadership and well as ego, diversity, and inclusion. Between the captivating pictures, cascading rhymes, and clever wordplay “The Search for King” provides something for all ages. And with more than 30 bird species making an appearance, I’m sure even experienced birders will see something unexpected.
