Make Birds Your Business

How do businesses connect with potential customers?
One way is to support what is important to the community. With a robust membership approaching 1,500, Travis Audubon has shown that protecting birds and their native habitat is of particular importance to Austin residents and their families.
Central Texans are not shy about voicing this concern as a priority, and area governments and nonprofits have listened. Imagine Austin, a 30-year road map for Austin’s next generation, lists protecting the environment and increasing access to nature among the top seven goals for the City of Austin. Cedar Park residents said in a 2013 survey that more trails and natural spaces were their top two priorities.
Research by Nielsen has shown that these priorities translate into business, with consumers overwhelmingly saying they prefer to buy products and services from companies that give back to society through environmental and other causes. The public also prefers to work for and invest in these companies.
Survey respondents asked to name the single most important cause that businesses should be addressing ranked the environment in the top three, along with economic development and poverty. Almost half say companies should focus on these efforts locally.
Virtually all American consumers now expect companies to support social or environmental causes. More than 90 percent say they are more loyal to such businesses. And 88 percent of the public is eager to hear from companies about such support, according to a 2013 Cone Communications study.
What does all that mean for a Central Texas business? That sustained and public support of a conservation-minded cause—such as Travis Audubon and its nature preserves—is a boon for the bottom line of any business, big or small.
