Rare Bird Alert: August 11, 2016

Rarities found this week

  • A GLOSSY IBIS was a great find off Witter Lane SE of Belton, Bell, on 8/7. No recent reports.
  • A Group of eleven WOOD STORKS were photographed soaring over NE Travis County farmland on 8/7. The birds were reported as continuing in a NW direction and did not touch down.
  • An alternate-plumaged BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER was photographed in the drying basins at Hornsby Bend, Travis, on 8/11.
  • A juvenile RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was a very nice find on the drying basins at Hornsby Bend, Travis, on 8/7. The bird was found late in the afternoon and stayed until dusk but was not refound the next day.

Continuing birds from previous weeks

  • LESSER NIGHTHAWKS continue at the Village Shopping Center in North Central Austin, Travis, last reported on 8/8. The best vantage point is to seek out the middle of the parking lot, which will afford 360 degree views. The birds have been spotted around the entire shopping center, including over Office Depot, Epoch Coffee and Alamo Drafthouse.
  • Two GREAT KISKADEEs continue in Caldwell County off Black Watch Ln & Purvis Farm in Lockhart on 8/7.
