The bird of the week was a *probable* BUFF-BELLIED HUMMINGBIRD that was photographed at a private residence in Henly, Hays, on 8/29. Full details have yet to be received.
A LEAST GREBE was reported at Spring Lake Preserve in San Marcos, Hays, through 9/1. Parksville Way retention pond in Cedar Park, Williamson, continues to host at least one LEAST GREBE through 9/1.
An immature ROSEATE SPOONBILL was reported flying over Cedar Creek Elementary in southwest Austin, Travis, on 8/31.
An adult BALD EAGLE was photographed at Granger Lake dam,Williamson, on 8/31.
A COUCH’S KINGBIRD has been a regular in the vicinity of Coventry Crossing Park in Leander, Williamson, through 9/3. Another COUCH’S KINGBIRD was reported from Devine Lake Park, also in Williamsonon 9/3. This bird may have been erroneously reported as a Western Kingbird.
The long-staying BLACK PHOEBE continues to frequent the grotto area at Hamilton Pool Preserve, Travis, as recently as 9/4.
Exceedingly rare for August, a CEDAR WAXWING continues at Lake Creek Trail near Anderson Mill, Williamson, through 8/31. The bird appears to be at least one year old and probably summered locally.
An early AUDUBON’S YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER was well photographed at Legacy Hills Park in Sun City, Williamson, on 9/5.
An apparent young female MACGILLIVRAY’S WARBLER was photographed Lake Creek Trail near Anderson Mill, Williamson, on 8/29.
**Side note: it’s that time of the fall when migrant Ruby-throated Hummingbirds replace summer resident Black-chinned Hummingbirds in Central Texas. Please take extra care in identifying the Archilochushummingbirds visiting your feeders.**
