While so much attention has been on a certain plover in the valley, this week in the Austin RBA circle has had a few early migrant passerines.

Rarities Found This Week

  • A BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER was a bit early in Bastrop, 8/2.
  • An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was seen in Bastrop, 8/5.
  • A YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was on the early side at Warbler Woods in Guadalupe, 7/31.
  • Up to two PEREGRINE FALCONS have been hunting at the Purple Martin roost at Highland Mall, Travis. A juvenile was photographed on 8/3 and an adult was described 8/6.
  • A group of AMERICAN KESTRELS have been at the Frost Tower in downtown Austin, Travis, most recently 8/4.
  • A BULLOCK’S ORIOLE was described at Dove Springs District Park in Austin, Travis on 8/6.

Continuing birds from previous weeks

  • The ROSEATE SPOONBILL at McKinney Falls State Park, Travis was seen again on 8/3.

Reports for the Austin area RBA cover a 60 mile radius, centered on the Capitol in downtown Austin. Bird sightings mentioned here have been filtered and scrutinized by the compiler and are believed to be genuine.
