ACE Academy Students Introduced to the Joys of Birding

Last week, Travis Audubon volunteer Mary Kay Sexton led a group of 23 3rd graders from ACE Academy on a bird walk along Shoal Creek. The kids learned how to listen for birds, and they discussed how birds differ from other types of animals. Birds seen (or heard!) included Blue Jays, Northern Cardinals, a Yellow-rumped Warbler, Cedar Waxwings, and Turkey Vultures. The grand finale was a fantastic close-up of a Red-shouldered Hawk, which didn’t seem at all bothered by a group of gawking kids!

Do you enjoy working with kids? We are always in need of more volunteers who are interested in leading birding lessons for elementary and middle school aged children. Contact volunteer@travisaudubon.org for more details!
