EPISODE 65: A Beautiful October Day

This was one of those days that makes being outside fun. It is so refreshing to have the intense heat past us. Our relaxing paddle was under a clear blue sky while we looked for things of interest in the river. We found some migrating birds and lots of fall flowers.

Perhaps the best bird we had today was a Vermillion Flycatcher. Took several looks before we finally got it figured out. I mean, how many Vermillion Flycatchers are there in Bastrop County?

Two other thing of considerable interest I need to mention. First was a roost of Great Egret where there were perhaps 18 birds in the group. Second big mention was a flock of Anhinga which was about 30 individuals.

Other birds of interest include several Pied-billed Grebes, Pileated Woodpeckers, Green Kingfisher and Cooper’s hawks. We also saw several newly-arriving Osprey and Teal.

We found lots of fall blooming flowers, too.

Today we had a larger size crew consisting of Pam Hohman, Linda Williams,Per Gavin, Ron Armbruster, Earl Richards, Art Jennings, Randy Kuykendall, Eric Stevens, Stuart Bailey, and John Barr. Thanks to all for participating. Art, Randy, and Eric came up from San Antonio to listen to our bad jokes and wilderness babble.
