EPISODE 76: Tricolored Herons

I have heard it said you should be careful what you wish for as it just may come true. I remember not so long ago wishing to see some Tricolored Herons on these river surveys. Today those wishes certainly came true. We saw
so many it became difficult to accurately determine how many we saw because of fear of double counting individuals. In the end we tallied 10. Check the photo by Earl Richards.

Of course we got some other great sighting. To start was an adult Bald Eagle. Associated with the migrations we got Anhinga and Mississippi Kites. Birds that always deserve mentioning are Pileated Woodpeckers. We were
counting hummingbirds every time we passed Trumpet Vine. Also deserving mention was the number of Blue-grey Gnatcatchers we got. They were plentiful all the way downstream. We also got a very early Northern Flicker. Our total species count ended up at 46.

From the wish list we only got migrating Mississippi Kites. Otherwise we got snake-eyes. Oh yea, speaking of snake eyes we found a very young and small Cottonmouth. Check the photo by Art Jennings.

It was another interesting day of wildlife observations too. For damsel flies Powdered Dancers were everywhere. Red-eared Sliders and soft shell turtles were found. Tons of White Checkerspot and Swallowtail butterflies too.

Today I need to thank Kelly Smith, Stephanie Rivaux, Jane Dyal, Linda Williams, Stacey Bucklin, Lea Charlton, Duncan Charlton, Earl Richards, Chris Masey, Stuart Bailey, Lucas Miller, John Barr, Kim McKnight, Art Jennings, and Skip. Thanks for helping and having a good time with us.
