Cemetery Birding: Evergreen Cemetery

8:30 AM – 10:30 AM

Join Travis Audubon and Austin Parks and Recreation Department in birding and exploring Austin’s Evergreen Cemetery. The large, historic cemetery is home to mature live oaks, pecans and cedar elms, and is flanked by woodlands that support a nice variety of birds. Evergreen was established in 1929 as a public cemetery to serve the African American communities of Travis County.

Your guides will be:
Jennifer Bristol, author of Parking Lot Birding: A Fun Guide to Discovering Birds in Texas; Mary Ann Robalino, Travis Audubon field trip leader and Master Birder; and Caitlen Hill, Austin PARD Cemetery Operations.

The cemetery is located at the corner of east 12th St and Airport Blvd. After pulling into the cemetery, participants should park at the North end of the cemetery, along the street furthest from the main gate. Bring a hat and sunscreen as parts of the cemetery are quite open, wear closed-toed shoes, and layers appropriate for the weather. Walk will proceed with very light rain or drizzle, but will be canceled in the event of lightning or heavy rain/winds. Please check your emails before leaving home on the morning of the walk, in case of late cancellation due to weather.

There are no restrooms available at the cemetery.
