Murphy Park in Taylor, Texas, is home to a spectacular rookery and evening roost for wading birds. Each summer, birds that nest along the Texas coast—such as herons and egrets—travel north with their young and gather here to roost for the night.

As the sun sets, the sky fills with the graceful flight of hundreds of cattle egrets returning to the trees. With a little luck, you may spot nearly every species of heron and egret found in Central Texas. It’s a truly awe-inspiring sight, as the trees gradually fill with birds and the quiet park transforms into a vibrant bird haven.

Watching this evening gathering is a peaceful, rewarding way to end your day.

Murphy Park is a small municipal park located in Taylor, about 35 miles northeast of Austin. The park features a small lake with an island in the center, where the birds roost and nest in large numbers—offering a close-up view of this unique natural spectacle.
