Africa Bird Safari to Malawi

Join Travis Audubon on an exceptional and affordable African Birding Safari to Malawi in November 2017! The safari has been organized by Travis Audubon and is being administered by JB Journeys.

With a varied topography and range of habitats, Malawi has a rich avian heritage of 648 species; 456 of these are resident and a further 94 are intra-African migrants of regular occurrence, most of which are known or suspected to breed inside the country. The country is a biological hotspot and is unknown to most Americans.

Malawi also has 22 Important Bird Areas (IBAs), encompassing over four million acres, 17% of the country’s total land area.

Southern ground Hornbill

Our African Birding Safari will visit 2 IBAs, including Liwonde National Park (350-80 bird species) and Lake Chilwa (105 bird species). Click here to read an African BirdLife Magazine article about Liwonde National Park and see pictures of this outstanding birding destination. We will also bird Afro-montane species on and near the Zomba Plateau. Non-birders are welcome to join the safari as there will be wild elephants and other large game for them to view.

There will be an opportunity to meet rural elementary school students to discuss the importance of birds, birding, and conservation. Prior to our departure from Austin, we can collect school and/or medical supplies. We will personally donate the items to a school and/or a rural hospital near Liwonde National Park.

Please contact Jordan Price at membership@travisaudubon.org to reserve your spot or for more information!
