New Poetry Writing Bird Walks

Want to add a new meaningful and mindful component to your birding? Looking for a safe space to nurture your creativity? Eager to connect with other birders?  Join Rene Bartos, Emma Bowar and Sharon Roy for Travis Audubon’s first birding and poetry walk at Commons Ford Metro Park on Saturday, October 11th from 8-10 am. As we bird, we’ll focus on noticing what we see and hear about the birds, their behavior and their habitats. At the end of our walk, we’ll sit and write some poetry about what we saw and heard. For this walk, we’ll focus on writing haikus and provide some guidelines and suggestions for how to do so. However, participants can write in whatever form appeals to them including free verse. No poetry writing or birding experience is necessary! Participants will have the opportunity to share their poetry with a partner or the group in a supportive, encouraging environment with respect for those who prefer to listen over sharing. Based on response and interest, it is our hope to offer future poetry birding walks that potentially will focus on instruction and use of other poetry forms.

This walk is open to all birding and poetry writing skill levels. We have binoculars to lend anyone that doesn’t have a pair. Registration is required and limited to 10 participants. Find more information and register here.

Contact Sharon at sharonmroy@gmail.com with any questions. A reminder email with relevant details will be sent a few days before the field trip.

We look forward to birding and writing with you!
