As our community continues to grow and as the national conversation about the use of the Audubon name in organizations dedicated to bird conservation evolves, the Travis Audubon Society Board of Directors has established an ad hoc committee to review our name and branding. The committee is tasked with conducting thorough research, understanding the perspectives of both current and prospective members, and making thoughtful recommendations to the board on whether to keep, modify, or adopt a new name for the organization we all care deeply about.
No decisions have been made regarding our name or overall branding. Should a name change ultimately be recommended, it will be subject to a vote by our membership. Any change would require a two-thirds majority of those who vote.
The ad hoc committee is composed of both current board members and members-atlarge. The review process includes research into how other leading Audubon chapters have handled this important issue – regardless of whether they have opted for a name change or decided to retain it. More importantly, we will engage in conversations and seek input from our members, as well as community leaders and stakeholders who have a vested interest in our mission.
To that end, we will be conducting a member survey this fall. Results of the survey will be anonymous and will help guide the board in its decision-making process.
We recognize that our members have differing and passionately held views about the Audubon name and its legacy. Any recommendations made by the Board will only be done after careful consideration of all viewpoints, and with a goal toward advancing our mission of inspiring conservation through birding. Regardless of any recommendations about the name, our goal is to reinforce our position as the leading voice for bird conservation in our growing region.
Thank you for your engagement and for sharing your perspectives on this important matter.
