Rarities found this week
- Two COMMON LOONs were photographed and heard calling at Stillhouse Hollow Lake SW of Belton, Bell, on 7/2. This is a rare summer sighting for our area.
- A pair of SNOWY PLOVERs were photographed on Pond 1 West at Hornsby Bend, Travis, on 7/8.
- A LESSER NIGHTHAWK was heard on Texas State University’s campus in San Marcos, Hays, on 7/3.
Continuing birds from previous weeks
- The long-staying GREAT KISKADEE continues at Berry Springs Park in Georgetown, Williamson, most recently on 7/3. The most recent report indicates there are now two birds present.
- A WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH continues at Max Starke Park in Sequin, Guadalupe on 7/8.
- Up to three LESSER NIGHTHAWKS continue at the Village Shopping Center in North Central Austin, Travis, last reported on 7/7. The birds are fairly active, flying around the shopping center, but have also been photographed perched on telephone wires.
Reports for the Austin area RBA cover a 60 mile radius, centered on the Capitol in downtown Austin. Bird sightings mentioned here have been filtered and scrutinized by the compiler and are believed to be genuine. When documentation or photographs were provided, that is mentioned along with the other information about the bird(s) being seen.
