Rare Bird Alert: May 12, 2016

Rarities found this week

  • A RUDDY TURNSTONE was photographed at Hornsby Bend, Travis, on 5/8. One was also photographed on 5/11 but not sure if the individual from 5/8 was continuing or if this is a new bird.
  • RUFF was found and photographed at Hornsby Bend, Travis, on 5/8 and continued at least through 5/11. No positive reports for 5/12.
  • GREAT KISKADEE was photographed at Aquaria Springs in San Marcos, Hays, on 5/7. No reports since the initial observation date.
  • GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was reported from Mills Pond in NW Austin, Travis, on 5/9.
  • BAIRD’S SPARROW was photographed at Slough Pond, Bell, on 5/10. This is well east of the main migration corridor of the species.
  • BOBOLINK was found near Nolan Creek Rd, north of Nolanville, Bell, on 5/8.

Continuing Birds from Previous Weeks

  • BLACK PHOEBE continues at the Luling Wastewater Treatment Plant, Caldwell, on 5/6.
  • GREAT KISKADEE continues at Berry Springs Park, Williamson, last reported on 5.9.
  • HUTTON’S VIREO continues at Warbler Woods, Guadalupe, on 5/10.
  • SWAINSON’S WARBLER continues at Booty’s Road Park, south of Lake Georgetown, Williamson, most recently on 5/11.

Reports for the Austin area RBA cover a 60 mile radius, centered on the Capitol in downtown Austin. Bird sightings mentioned here have been filtered and scrutinized by the compiler and are believed to be genuine. When documentation or photographs were provided, that is mentioned along with the other information about the bird(s) being seen.
