Rare Bird Alert: September 13, 2013

It was a fairly dull week but I am trying to stay on task. The area has seen a large influx of Yellow, Wilson’s, and Blue-gray Gnatcatchers; little outside the expected has been reported.

Rarities Found This Week:

  • A Hutton’s Vireo was at Warbler Woods in Guadalupe County on 9/7. This species has retreated somewhat from the area.
  • A Zone-tailed Hawk was photographed on Dry Creek near Lake Austin in Travis County on 9/10.
  • An Eastern Whip-poor-will was recorded at dusk at a Bastrop County home on 9/12.
  • A Bullock’s Oriole was on the north side of Stillhouse Hollow Lake in Bell County on 9/7,8.
  • Great Kiskadees were reported on the Colorado River Survey conducted this month in Bastrop County on 9/7 and at a private property in Caldwell County southwest of Lockhart on 9/7.
  • A Scott’s Oriole was photographed in a Bell County backyard on 9/10.
  • A Magnolia Warbler was seen at Bastrop State Park on 9/10.

Continuing from Previous Weeks:

  • The juvenile Reddish Egret continued to be seen at Bob Wentz/Windy Point Park on Lake Travis on 9/9.
  • Wood Storks in Williamson County were seen on 9/10 at CR438 and FM112 southeast of Taylor (7 of them) and on flyover at Reservoir 17 on 9/10.
  • Burrowing Owl was seen again at a downtown Austin parking garage on 9/10.

Reports for the Austin area RBA cover a 60 mile radius, centered from the Capitol in downtown Austin. Bird sightings mentioned here have been filtered and scrutinized by the compiler and are believed to be genuine.
