Baker Sanctuary hosted some awesome volunteers this month who improved the walkability of part of the property.
Brendan Ryan, with help from his parents and Boy Scout Troop 271, built a 24′ long foot bridge in the North Valley over Harris Creek. The crossing had been a particularly dangerous one before the bridge, requiring hikers to scramble down to a large, sometimes very slick, stone to make the crossing. One of the more challenging aspects of the project was hiking in all the materials to construct the bridge, a distance of 7/10 of a mile and included obstacles such as multiple switch-backs (tricky when hauling 24′ long pieces of lumber), scrambling up rocky drainages, and navigating through uncooperative vegetation.
In total, the scouts invested 143 volunteer hours at the site. Many thanks to Brendan and Troop 271!
